Paul Beatty Jewelers in downtown Punxsutawney has been a familiar local establishment since 1950.
After being discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1947, Paul Beatty, a lifelong resident of Punxsutawney, decided to utilize the G.I. bill by attending the Thacker Academy of Watchmaking in Pittsburgh. Paul Beatty Jewelers first opened its doors in September of 1950. Surprisingly, there were no available storefronts to rent at the time in Punxsutawney. Young Mr. Beatty had to go to Sykesville to find a place to open his small watch repair shop. Paul continued to serve his local customers by selling and repairing watches, and stocking a small selection of jewelry. In 1957, the building at the current location of 120 West Mahoning Street became available. Paul purchased the property, but only occupied one third of the space while renting the two other store fronts to other businesses. The spacious store made a larger inventory of watches and jewelry possible. A substantial gift department was also added, thanks to the extra space. |
In the Fall of 1981, the store underwent additional changes and doubled its size by utilizing the area previously occupied by the Capitol Finance Company. This addition provided the space to expand the gift department and to add a large selection of mantle, wall, and Grandfather clocks
